Literacy and language play critical roles in educational achievement. LRDC's Reading and Language researchers address basic issues in reading science and language science and educational issues in literacy and language learning. These include the study of skilled reading and comprehension at the word, sentence, and text levels; comparisons of reading and language processes across writing systems and languages; brain systems for reading and language; second and foreign language learning and reading; bilingualism; language production and perception; discourse; individual differences in reading and language skill; language experience and long-term learning; aphasia.
The core research includes laboratory studies using behavioral and neuroscience methods (ERPs and fMRI) and studies of language learning in educational settings. Addressing instructional improvement is work on writing assessment using automated systems, literacy coaching for teachers and family practices for early language and literacy development.
