In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal backing.

Snee

Mrs. Katherine Snee established the Snee-Reinhardt Foundation in 1983. For many years, Mrs. Snee and her husband William began a tradition of making contributions to a wide variety of organizations for public benefit. Mr. and Mrs. Snee never sought any public recognition for their charitable works. It was under Mr. Heasley's chairmanship that the foundation expanded its grant making capabilities. The changes enabled the board to consider a larger variety of grants. Each year, the Snee Reinhardt Charitable Foundation awards nearly one million dollars in grants to organizations fitting the foundations criteria. The majority of those grants are awarded in Western Pennsylvania.
