The LRDC Computing Services group provides support and services to the LRDC community.  We also act as a liaison to University's Computing Services and Systems Development (CSSD), including Faculty Computing.

In general, we provide the following services:

Network Management--File Server and University E-mail Accounts, Backups, Web Services, and Printing

  • Maintain four file servers which provide storage space for more than 250 PCs, Macs, and Unix/Linux workstations
  • Create and maintain file server accounts (Computer Account Application)
  • As a liaison to CSSD, we create, request quota for, and assist with University UNIX, IMAP, and Enterprise Exchange accounts (Computer Account Application)
  • Perform regular backups for files on the file servers.
  • Assist with the maintenance of the LRDC web server; train and offer ongoing support to project staff who want to set up and manage their own site; troubleshoot web issues
  • Maintain laser printers throughout the building; offer scanning and color printing services

Hardware and Software Consulations, Orders, Setup, Installation, and Repair

  • Offer consultations about, and place orders for, hardware and software purchases.
  • Set up and install software and hardware on your office computers; coordinate machine moves (request a machine move via e-mail).
  • Assist Linux users with the installation and update of RedHat; maintain an online discussion group.
  • Offer in-house repair service for a variety of computer problems and oversee third-party repair services when needed

Support, Documentation and Training

  • Provide documentation for the LRDC network and Remote Access, as well as customized documentation
  • Provide individual and small-group training and classes on computing systems and software used at LRDC
  • Solve problems that arise in your computing environment

Virus and Spam Prevention/Control and Security

  • Offer advice on computer security
  • Maintain a web-based virus protection resource center
  • Assist with the reporting and minimizing of e-mail spam
  • Send alerts in response to serious virus/security threats
