| The Reading and Language Group is dedicated to understanding the cognitive and neural
processes that mediate all aspects of language comprehension and production, including first
and second language speaking, reading, and writing. Our research facilities are located in
the University of Pittsburgh's Learning Research and Development Center, and include a suite
of behavioral research labs, an ERP lab, two eye-tracking labs, and access to the fMRI center.
The group also sponsors bi-weekly meetings to discuss research and issues related to reading and language.
Other prominent scientists in the field also work within the LRDC. Isabel Beck and Margaret McKeown have looked at how children can be taught more effectively to read, including questions of word reading, vocabulary, and comprehension. Walter Schneider's use of behavioral and brain imaging studies to probe human learning and attention is complemented by Julie Fiez's focus on cognitive neuroscience studies of reading.
