I got a B.A. in probability and statistics from Beijing Normal University in 1991. I got a Master's degree in cognitive psychology from Beijing Normal University in 1994 and a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from Beijing Normal University in 1997. My major interest is in comparing word reading of Chinese and English. I have developed a computational model that simulates the detailed time course of Chinese character reading. This model explains the empirical data, and also predicts new results that have been confirmed using behavioral methods. To examine the time course and location of orthographic, phonological, and semantic processing, I also use event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and source localization techniques. I have found significant temporal differences between English and Chinese materials in the right occipital cortex. I have also started to use functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to compare the brain activity of Chinese-English bilinguals and American students who are learning Chinese in classroom. The preliminary results showed some interesting language differences in the left fusiform and occipital areas of the brain. A new fMRI study was started recently to explore the phonological and semantic areas of reading by training American students with Chinese materials in a controlled environment. |
